NES Zelda is fantastic, one of the most influential games of all time. NES Kirby's Adventure (which it seems OP forgot) holds up very well vs. Just compare NES Mario to Game Boy Mario, Game Boy's library is an amazing achievement for the early 90s, but does it top the NES? Ummmm.no! Oh, and lets not forget Tale Spin (actually, can we?) - the GB version is a butchered game compared to the NES version, featuring far less content than the console version and basically runs at half the frame rate. Tenchi Wo Kurau? GB version of the game is parred down in terms of character/squad size compared to the larger NES/Famicom games. Not to mention smaller screen real estate can lead to some less satisfying boss fights. Mega Man? Probably the biggest of the NES Capcom games and while the GB games (aside from MMII, that just sucks) are good, you have stuff like the games running far slower (especially III and IV) with lesser level design compared to the NES games. The GB sequel is better but better than CV3? Not a chance.ĭuck Tales 1&2 are great GB ports but parred down compared to the excellent NES games. So its all swings and roundabouts.Ĭastlevania - CV1 and 3 are vastly superior to the GB games, especially the first one which is a meandering mess of a game. Now if we were talking Wario Land.Īlso, Mario 3 is better than any of the Gameboy Mario games. Then again, I'd still prefer to play SMB over Land 2, aside from the end bit with Wario, Im not much of a fan of the worlds in Land 2. Of course one is probably going to be better, it should be. Likewise, SMB vs Mario Land 2 - your taking a game that fleshed out ideas and is several years newer compared to a 1985? game. It'd be like me comparing almost any sequel to its original game. Zelda vs Links Awakening is a flawed comparison because your basically saying "hey this sequel to LTTP is better than the original Zelda made many years earlier". This varies drastically based on the games you are comparing as well as other factors. I didn't intend to derail the thread, start a console war, or offend anyone, and I'm going to edit out my comment because it's not my intention to troll up a good thread on two game libraries I grew up with and love. I was too strong in my wording with too much hyperbole in my original reply. I was only kidding about Pokemon kids because so many people now in our late 20s and 30s played them on Gameboy growing up and many people have a lot of nostalgia for the franchise. I still believe that games that were on both platforms played better on the NES, like Megaman, Ninja Gaiden, and Contra and it is surprising how many people prefer the GB games. I am surprised by the poll results since the NES is the home of so many legendary franchises and just watching things like GDQ you see how so many classic NES franchises are still embraced by the gaming community. There's nothing wrong with the Gameboy library it's one of my favorite handhelds. I can't think of nearly as many GB or even GB+GBC games that fit my taste, but as I said I'll be reading the thread to see if I can learn about some new games.Ĭlick to shrink.I actually am playing Final Fantasy Legend 2 on GB right now on one of my retro handhelds. I could probably add another 25~50 games that I know have a reputation but I haven't played yet. And you can definitely get translated JP roms like Famicon Wars and Fire Emblem today, but I haven't played them. There a bunch of genres I don't play very much so I know I have huge blind spots. There are so many more I know I'm missing. I've been thinking about this one a lot lately and need to revisit it to find out) Super Mario Bros 2 (fuck the haters I love this game and always have).
